Perry Gets Early Lead in Texas

Rick Perry, Texas’ Governor was riding a sign of anti-Washington feeling toward conquest Tuesday in the hard-fought Republican gubernatorial primary.

To avoid an expected runoff Mr. Perry needed to finish the night by more than half of the vote. With only 15 % of the state's more than 8,000 precincts reporting, he had 52%, while his opponent Ms. Hutchison had 31%. take

Debra Medina was running a third number. She had 17%, in a race which drew national attention as a referendum on the direction of the Republican Party.

Mr. Perry is promoting himself by saying the party's future would stress economic growth and independence from Washington. He has also been accusing agencies from the Education Department to the Environmental Protection Agency of treading on Texas's toes.
