Chilean President Appeals UN for More Aid

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet on Monday has appealed to the United Nations for aid and more troops to stop looting in the country's heavily damaged south.
Earlier, looting has erupted in Concepción, the hard-hit southern city of Chile, while many people remained bound in a 15-story apartment building that toppled onto its side.
This appeal came amid local criticism that the Bachelet government initially did not consider the devastation, squandering chances to rescue survivors. At least 723 fatalities have been confirmed yet that number is still expected to rise.
Earthquake experts said that the death toll appears low as compared to the enormous power of the magnitude-8.8 quake. The northern capital of Santiago was slowly returning to business as usual Monday. Subway lines were running again and many shops and offices were open for business

Chile Quake: Tsunami warning system worked as intended

The Chile quake that struck Saturday and activated a tsunami that traveled throughout the Pacific basin has tested the region's tsunami-warning network in decades.

By several measures, the region-wide warning effort was a success, though in retrospect evacuations in many places far from the Chilean coast appear to have been excessive given the size of the surge that ultimately arrived.

The state emergency officials have reported that they have put the size of coming waves at between 6 and 10 feet. The waves that did arrive were less than 3 feet tall.

Chile Earthquake Insured Losses may Amount to $8B

The loss after a devastated earthquake in Chile has amounted to $8 billion, a rate which won't have a big impact on the pricing of insurance.

It is expected that the well-developed economy of Chile will recover this loss.

Eqecat Inc., a Catastrophe risk modeling firm, has pointed out that the insured losses could range from $3 billion to $8 billion. The company also said the loss represents 15-40% of the estimated insured limits for earthquake coverage.

The loss estimate takes into explanation insured damage to belongings, commerce interruption losses and higher prices for cleanup and redevelopment materials, services and labor due to a surge in demand after the catastrophe.
